Free Essays on Oedipus

Everyone has a family or at least knows a family, so everyone can relate to a story about family. â€Å"Regret, by Kate Chopin, and â€Å"My Oedipus Complex,† by Frank O’Connor, are two very different stories about the same thing – family. â€Å"Regret,† a tale about an older woman, who, never having married or had children, gets her first experience with them by taking care of her neighbor’s children for a short while, and â€Å"My Oedipus Complex,† a short story about a young boy who decides he is better suited to the affections of his mother than is his father, are two very different approaches to show the need for a complete family. The similarities between the two stories are easily appreciated. First, as I stated earlier, both of the stories are about families, and how the lack of, what most people consider, a â€Å"normal† and â€Å"complete† family causes problems. In â€Å"Regret,† Mamzelle Aurà ©lie completely lacks a family; she has never married, has never had children, and has only had one marriage proposal, which was promptly rejected. Mamzelle Aurà ©lie is not even properly a woman without a family; she much more resembles a man with her determination, man’s hat, army overcoat, and boots. Additionally, owning a farm, managing and employing people, and knowing how to use a gun are all traditionally men’s occupations (at least in the 1800’s). Certainly, she knows nothing about children and how to raise them, and that is the problem, at least on the surface. When presented with her neighbor’s children, Mamzelle Aurà ©lie doesn’t know how to care for them. In â€Å"My Oedipus Complex†, we see another incomplete family. The father is away at war, and the mother and son, Larry, are alone for long periods. Thus, the son becomes overly attached to the mother, and sees himself as her spouse. Certainly, the son becomes jealous of the father when he returns, and tries to make him leave so he again can be alone with his mother. Ho... Free Essays on Oedipus Free Essays on Oedipus â€Å"Gods can be evil sometimes.† In the play â€Å"Oedipus the King†, Sophocles defamed the gods’ reputation, and lowered their status by making them look harmful and evil. It is known that all gods should be perfect and infallible, and should represent justice and equity, but with Oedipus, the gods decided to destroy him and his family for no reason. It might be hard to believe that gods can have humanistic traits, but in fact they do. The gods, especially Apollo, are considered evil by the reader because they destroyed an innocent man’s life and his family. They destroyed Oedipus by controlling his fate, granting people the power of prophecy, telling Oedipus about his fate through the oracle of Apollo, and finally afflicting the people of Thebes with a dreadful plague. Fundamentally, by utilizing fate, prophecies, the oracle of Apollo, and the plague, the gods played a significant role in the destruction of Oedipus and his family. By controlling fate, the gods carry all the responsibility of Oedipus in killing his father and marrying his mother. They are the only ones who can control fate, and thus they are the only ones to blame for what happened to Oedipus. They could have made Oedipus’ life less miserable, but they decided to destroy his and his family’s life by this terrible fate without him committing a sin. â€Å"It was Apollo, friends, Apollo, who brought to fulfillment all my sufferings. But the hand that struck my eyes was mine and mine alone.† Oedipus blames Apollo for his two shameful crimes that caused his sufferings. On the other hand, he admits that the gods had nothing to do with his blindness, and that he’s responsible for that. Also, in the previous quote, Oedipus tries to diminish his shame by convincing his people that it is not his fault, but Apollo’s, for murdering his father and marrying his mother. The moral of this story is that human beings canâ €™t escape their fate, and thus it is not Oedipu... Free Essays on Oedipus Blindness is the downfall of the hero Oedipus in the play â€Å"â€Å"King Oedipus†Ã¢â‚¬ by Sophocles. Not only does the blindness appear physically, but also egotistically as he refuses to acknowledge the possibility of him actually being the murderer of Laius, the former King of Thebes. Coincidentally, he is also Oedipus’’s biological father. The use of light and dark in the play is strategically applied in order to better understand the emotion that lies within the characters. As blame is placed upon Oedipus for the murder of Laius, he blinds himself from the possible reality that he may be the killer. The people of Thebes are informed that there is an impending curse upon them as a result of the murder mystery of their previous king, Laius. In order to quicken the cure, Oedipus calls on Teiresias, the blind prophet to aide them. Excessive pride fuels his inability to believe the prophecy of Teiresias stating Oedipus is the killer, and that he has married his mother. â€Å"â€Å"Until I came –– I, ignorant Oedipus, came –– and stopped the riddler’’s mouth, guessing the truth by mother-wit, not bird-love.†Ã¢â‚¬ Because he continually boasts about how he has saved Thebes from the Sphinx, he believes that no one could know more than he, especially if he is the one to be accused of a crime he â€Å"â€Å"knows†Ã¢â‚¬ he didn’’t commit. In response Teiresias argues, â€Å"â€Å"You ar e please to mock my blindness. Have you eyes, and do not see your own damnation? Eyes and cannot see what company you keep.†Ã¢â‚¬ This is a pivotal component to the irony behind the idea of blindness throughout the play. Although Teiresias is physically blind, he is able to accept and â€Å"â€Å"see†Ã¢â‚¬ the truth, while Oedipus physically being able to see is left in the dark rejecting truth. The blindness of Oedipus leads to the darkness of Thebes also known as The City of Light. â€Å"â€Å"We cannot believe, we cannot deny; all’’s dark. We fear, but we cannot s... Free Essays on Oedipus In Sophocles,’ Oedipus the King, Oedipus introduces himself by saying â€Å"I Oedipus, whom all men call the great.† (8) Oedipus was a â€Å"great† man, but he also was cursed. He was cursed by the almighty god, Apollo, but he was too arrogant to believe the curse would be fulfilled. This story questions the everlasting mystery of â€Å"fate versus free will.† I will attempt to explain how Apollo’s curse, as well as Oedipus’ actions, ruined Oedipus’ life. Oedipus was cursed before he was born. He was cursed because Apollo thought Laius, Oedipus’ father, and his family, brought homosexuality to Greece. The curse said that Laius and his wife, Jocasta, would have a baby, and that baby would grow up and kill his father and marry his mother. When Laius and Jocasta heard this they gave Oedipus to a shepherd to leave on the top of a hill to die. The shepherd could not do this, so he gave Oedipus to another shepherd. That shepherd then gave Oedipus to the king and queen of Corinth, Polybus and Merope. When Oedipus grew older, an oracle told him about the curse. Oedipus did not want anything to happen to Polybus and Merope; he thought they were his real parents, so he left Corinth. While he was walking, a carriage was coming towards him. He was too arrogant to move, so as the carriage cam towards him somebody swung a club at him. Oedipus killed the men in the carriage, but one man who fled. One of the men he killed was his birth father Laius. Oedipus knew he was destined to kill his father, but he did not think twice about killing the people inside of the carriage. His arrogance and pride got the best of him. He felt since he was a prince he did not have to move for a carriage. This is the first example of Oedipus thinking he could outwit Apollo. Oedipus continued traveling until he reached the city of Thebes. When he arrived, there was a blight on the city. Oedipus asked how the blight could be removed and someone told him a riddle h... Free Essays on Oedipus In the play Oedipus written by Sophocles, fate and the Gods are often to blame for Oedipus’ terrible tragedy. If examined closer, however, it seems that with careful, logical thinking Oedipus could have saved himself a significant amount of trouble. Throughout the play there are choices places before the characters. Choices that ultimately will make or break the future of Oedipus. It was not fate that caused the downfall of Oedipus. It was the decisions that were made out of haste or pride. In Oedipus’ past we see that even he is aware that he has choice and free will; upon learning from an oracle that he will be the murderer of his father and sleep with his mother, he flees. He had the choice to talk to his family about the prophecy, but he chose to take matters into his own hands and ran. Oedipus’ step-father could have told him the truth in the beginning, but he chose to keep the fact that Oedipus was adopted to himself. This is just the beginning of a whirlwind of bad choices made in the light of haste and pride. â€Å"I must bring what is dark to light,† (line 134) Oedipus boasts loudly after learning the cause of the city’s plague. This illustrates the pride, and arrogance that Oedipus portrays. This pride blinded him from making a sound decision. When approached by Creon, the holder of the news from the oracle, Oedipus has the choice to speak with him in private. Instead Oedipus says proudly, â€Å"Let them all hear it.† â€Å"It is for them I suffer more than for myself.† (line 97). In his rush to impress his crowd, Oedipus has Creon spill the news over the entire crowd. We see that unfortunately, Oedipus is not the only one affected by these bad choices. Along Oedipus’ path of flight from Corinth, he stumbles on to King Laios and his men. The argument over who must cross first heats into a violent battle leavi... Free Essays on Oedipus Oedipus is a prime example of a tragidy, according to Aristotle’s definition in the â€Å"poetics†. Aristotle’s Poetics is considered the first work of literary criticism in our tradition. The couple of pages in the book mainly describe tragedy from Aristotle’s point of view. He defines tragedy as being an imitation of an action that is a whole and complete in itself and of a certain magnitude. Aristotle also points out terms such as catharsis, which can be said that is the purification of one’s soul. He argues in his Poetics that catharsis is achieved through emotions of pity or fear, which is created in the audience as they witness the tragedy of a character who suffers unjustly, but is not entirely innocent. Then he moves on to describing the main elements of tragedy. Such elements are: plot, character, language, thought, spectacle, and melody. Then he classifies these in three parts, the media, the manner and the objects. The language and melody constitute the â€Å"media†, in which they effect the imitation. Then there is the spectacle, which is the â€Å"manner†, and the remaining three, the plot, character and thought are the â€Å"objects† that are imitated. Aristotle considers the plot to be the most important of these elements. He describes the plot as not being a unity revolving around one man. Instead, he states that many things happen to one man, which may not always go together, to form a unity. At the same time, he says that among the actions that a character performs there are many that may be irrelevant to one another, but yet they form a unified action. Aristotle continues depicting the plot categorizing it in two manners: simple and complex. In a simple plot, a change of fortune takes place without a reversal or recognition. In contrast, in a complex plot, the change of fortune involves recognition or a reversal or both. To understand these ideas better he defines reversal and rec... Free Essays on Oedipus According to Greek mythology, the Sphinx, a creature that is part woman, part bird, and part lion, caused famine and disease in Thebes that could be ended only when someone solved her riddle. Oedipus traveled to Thebes and answered the riddle correctly. The citizens of Thebes consider him a hero because he restored harmony to their kingdom. Sophocles alludes to the riddle of the Sphinx several times in his play, Oedipus Rex. Since the riddle is a metaphor for Oedipus' life, it is ironic that he was able to answer the question. His revelation of the riddle of the Sphinx further supports the perspective of Oedipus as the archetypal tragic man. The sphinx asks, "What has four legs in the morning, two legs in the afternoon, and three legs at night?" Oedipus correctly answers "man", saving Thebes from the terrible drought and disease brought about by the horrible creature. The different times of day mentioned in the question actually represent different stages in life. In the morning, or childhood, humans crawl on their hands and knees. In the afternoon, or adulthood, humans walk on their own two feet, and at night, which represents old age, many humans rely on the aid of a walking stick, which represents a third leg. When the reader interprets the symbolism of the riddle, it becomes a metaphor for Oedipus' life. Like every human, he begins life as a baby, crawling on his hand and knees. As he grows older, he walks on two feet, becoming an independent man, and ruler of Thebes. In his old age, Oedipus must rely on a walking stick because he is blind. Like all huma... Free Essays on Oedipus Sophocles’ Oedipus, the King is a great representation of Greek tragedy and of the human experience. Within it, he explores the intricacies of human thinking and communication along with its ability to change as more information and knowledge is acquired. His primary focus as the story begins and progresses is the growth of Oedipus from an unintelligible and unenlightened mentality to its antithesis. Because the story was one familiar to most of its viewers in its time, there are certain things that they are expected to already know. Among them is the background to the legend. Most generally it was that it was prophesied that Laios and Jocasta, king and queen of Thebes, would give birth to a child who would grow up to murder his father and marry his mother. And, fearing the dreadful prophecy, that the parents nailed their first son's feet together (thus the name Oedipus, which means â€Å"swollen-foot†) and left him to die on a lonely moun-tainside outside the city. Moreover, that he was found by a wandering shepherd who took him to the nearby city of Corinth where he was adopted by the childless King Polybos and Queen Merope who raised him as a son and prince in the royal household. Then, when he was a young adult and first heard the prophecy, that he assumed that it applied to Polybos and Merope, the only parents he had ever known, and had fled Corinth and wandered aroun d Greece where he met a group of travelers and killed an old man who, unknown to him, was his real father, King Laios. Then, when he arrived at Thebes, he met the Sphinx, a monster who guarded the gates of the city and correctly answered its riddle and was rewarded with the title of king of Thebes and was given the hand of the re-cently widowed queen, Jocasta. The true horror in his life begins here because he has four children with her, An-tigone, Ismene, Eteocles, and Polyneices and fulfills the prophecy. The story begins after some time after Oedipus has taken ... Free Essays on Oedipus Whether or not Oedipus’ downfall should be attributed to his own free will or that of the gods can only be established by the reference point it is to be analyzed from. In the time of Dionysus and the day for which Sophocles wrote this tragedy one would have to assume Oedipus’s downfall was most likely meant to be attributed to the will of the gods. However, one must take into account the reference point of our modern thinking and knowledge of analytics and philosophy. From this vantage point it should only be reasonable that Oedipus’s downfall could be that of his own free will. There are many instances within the text of the play itself that give way to this analysis. The play starts off with King Oedipus talking with the people of his kingdom who have come to seek his help with the plague that has fallen upon them. The priest who has been chosen to speak for the group asks of Oedipus, â€Å"†¦O mighty King, we turn to you: Find us our safety, find us a remedy†¦Noblest of men restore life to your city!† (Oedipus the King Prologue 43-46). Oedipus knows it is his obligation as king to help his people so he ensures them he has already sent Creon his brother-in-law to the Oracle at Delphi to seek out the remedy of the plague. Creon returns to tell Oedipus that Apollo has commanded he take revenge on whoever killed the former King Laios. As any good king should Oedipus promises, â€Å"You shall see how I stand by you, as I should, To avenge the city and the city’s god†¦By avenging the murdered king†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Oedipus the King Prologue 138-143). With the knowledge of the back story in mind this promise is obviously full of peripity and the first of the instances where Oedipus by his own free will leads himself to his eventual downfall. After the people of the land yield no clues to the identity of the murder Oedipus sends for the blind clairvoyant Teiresias, hoping he can shed some light on th... Free Essays on Oedipus Prophecies â€Å"Who is the man denounced by the prophetic voice from Delphi’s cliffs-the man whose blood-stained hands committed a nameless crime? Now is the time for him to run, faster than storm-swift horses. In full armor Apollo son of Zeus leaps upon him, with the fire of the lightning. And in the murderer’s track follow dreadful unfailing spirits of vengeance. The word of Apollo has blazed out from snowy Parnassus for all to see. Track down the unknown murderer by every means. He roams under cover of the wild forest, among caves and rocks, like a wild bull, wretched, cut off from mankind, his feet in pain. He turns his back on the prophecies delivered at the world’s center, but they, alive forever, hover round him. The wise prophet’s words have brought me terror and confusion. I cannot agree with him, nor speak against him. I do not know what to say. I waver in hope and fear; I cannot see forward or back. What cause for quarrel was there between Oedipus and L aius? I never heard of one in time past; I know of none now.(31-32)† The chorus is asking whoever killed Laius should leave before being found and killed as it says here â€Å"Now is the time for him to run, faster than storm-swift horses. And in the murderer’s track follow dreadful unfailing spirits of vengeance.†(pg.31-32 chorus: line 4-8) Here it says that Zeus and Apollo will punish the murderer , so the murderer better run away from the gods. The chorus also says the murderer is hiding somewhere and Apollo made sure we know that he wants us to find him by any means necessary , as it says here â€Å"The Apollo has blazed out from snowy Parnassus for all to see. Background: Play written between 441-427 B.C.; Greek theatre as an outgrowth of religious celebrations; competition; sets of four plays performed together, a trilogy of tragedies followed by a comedy (usually); (distinction between tragedy and comedy (Aristophanes)); Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides; many others lost; only partial records of these three. B. Much of what we know about how the Greeks themselves thought of tragedy derived from Aristotle. Speech in verse (metre, rhythm, music); scenery; masks; spectacle. Read definition from poetics (1). C. Catharsis (pity and fear) - "expurgation" vs. "establishment of equilibrium." D. Achievement of catharsis through plot, not through effects or characters. Tragedy is about the fortune or misfortune which human beings achieve or suffer (through action or happening at least). Reversals and recognitions (surprising, unpredictable events) key in producing pity and fear. Yet the plot must be complex yet tight, the events, including the reversals, a necessary result of other events - not just arbitrary buffeting at the hands of fortune. Oedipus the King is Aristotle's paradigm of a tragedy which works this way. E. Examples from the text: 1) Oedipus brought to Thebes (and to kill his father, marry his mother) by his attempt to avoid these eventualities. 2) Jocasta's attempt to put his mind at rest about killing his father - "don't believe seers, e.g. they were wrong about Laius being killed by his son" - the very thing that starts Oedipus on the suspicion that he is guilty. 3) Messenger's attempt to calm him re marrying mother - "not real parents" -catapults him closer to the realisation. Notion of irony - verbal ("I know the name, I never met the man") and actional (above). Many of the audience would have known the story all along. (But not all - see Aristotle.) ... Free Essays on Oedipus Oedipus was a great man, and the devotion to his people proves this. For instance, when the city is overwhelmed by plague, Oedipus answers the call of his people and searches for the reason. â€Å"I know that you are deathly sick; and yet, Sick as you are, not one is as sick as I† (p 1257). Only to find the only way to save his city is by finding the killer of king Laios, an answer that Oedipus comes to find out he does not want to know. Teiresias, a blind man that is very wise tells Oedipus that he is the killer. â€Å"I say that you are the murderer whom you seek†(p 1264). As King, Oedipus could have paid no mind to such accusations. Instead, he upholds his honor by searching deeper for the truth. As a result of Oedipus’ search for the truth, he is faced with another problem. What if he really is the killer? Oedipus was told by Creon that the murderer of Laios would be â€Å"exiled† from the city! This meant that if it was him, this judgement would be placed upon him as well. Oedipus shows great courage in wanting to know the truth, no matter what it is. Many other leaders, past and present have been known to cover up such truths. We still do not know the true killer of John F. Kennedy because of the American government.... Free Essays on Oedipus The Guilt of Oedipus When reading Sophocles’ play, Oedipus the King, many controversial topics are presented throughout the entire piece. The major controversy in this play is whether or not Oedipus is responsible for his fate. After carefully examining this play, Oedipus is clearly not to blame for his tragic fate because the Gods had already predetermined his fate before the play even begins. Other reasons that he is not to blame are that his parents sent him to be killed as a young child and the shepherds did not kill him as they were ordered to. Throughout this paper, these arguments, along with excerpts from the play, will be used to defend Oedipus’ honor. The first point, and probably the most important one, is that before the play even begins, Oedipus’ fate is predetermined from the Gods. Apollo is the God that made the prophecy that eventually would come true. The prophecy made is clearly explained by Oedipus, towards the middle of the play: Apollo told me once- it is my fate- I must make love with my own mother, shed my father’s blood with my own hands. (1090-1092) This prophecy condemned Oedipus from his birth. This prophecy comes true and Oedipus kills his father and marries his mother. Oedipus is not to blame because he is under the assumption that Polybus, The King of Corinth, and Merope are his real birth parents. However, Laius, King of Thebes and killed by Oedipus, and Jocasta, Oedipus’ wife, are his real parents. Oedipus knows of the prophecy and he desperately tries not to let it come true and having the knowledge of who is real parents were, might have saved him from his agonistic fate. A second point showing Oedipus is not to blame is the fact that his real parents, Laius and Jocasta, sent him to be killed on the mountains of Cithaeron. Knowledgeable of Apollo’s prophecy, Laius and Jocasta desperately try to avoid it from coming true. They pin Oedipus’ ankles together and sen... Free Essays on Oedipus What Was Oedipus’s Crime? Oedipus, ruler of Thebes, murdered his father and married his mother. Such acts are almost always deemed unnatural and criminal; they are not tolerated within traditional society. A person who has committed these illegal acts of murder and incest would be considered a criminal, yet Sophocles’s character, Oedipus, is not guilty of either crime. Prior to the birth of Oedipus, a prophecy was spoken over Laius and his wife Jocasta. They were told that their son would one day be his father’s killer and would then marry his mother. In fear, King Laius and Queen Jocasta sent the baby Oedipus off with a slave to be killed. He was never killed, but rather was given to a childless king and queen which lovingly raised him. Oedipus was never factually told about his lineage. Later in his life, Oedipus was confronted by several unknown men while traveling. Upon confrontation, Oedipus killed all but one of the men in self defense. Unknowingly, Oedipus had begun to fulfill the prophecy for one of the men had been his birth father, Laius. While still traveling, Oedipus had come to the city of Thebes. There, he saved the city from the wrath of the Sphinx by solving her riddle. Seen as a savior by the citizens of Thebes, Oedipus was made king and subsequently, the husband of Jocasta. Oedipus and his wife-mother ruled together and had four children while never knowing of the true relationship between each other. As the tragedy comes to a close, the truth is revealed to Oedipus concerning his lineage and unnatural actions. Although the truth had been spoken to him about these matters previously, Oedipus had chosen not to believe and understandably so. True revelation comes to Oedipus through the same slave that had been ordered to kill him as a baby. Since Oedipus had no knowledge of his birth parents, he cannot be accused of knowingly fulfilling the prophecy. He had no understanding of Laius as his birth father upo...

Guarantee of Republican for of Government

Guarantee of Republican for of Government The Constitution places several obligations on the National Government for the benefit of the States. Most of them are to be found in Article Four. The Constitution requires the National Government to guarantee to every State in the Union a republican form of government (Article four). The Constitution does not define republican form of government, and the Supreme Court has regularly refused to do so. The term generally understood to mean a representative government, however. The Supreme Court has held that the question of whether or not a States has republican form of government is political question(www.TheAmericanGovernment.com). That is, it is one to be decided by the political branches of the government- the President and Congress- and not by the courts. The leading case here is Luther v Borden, 1849. It grew out of Dorrs Rebellion, a revolt led by Thomas W. Dorr against the State of Rhode Island in 1841-1842. Dorr and his followers had written and proclaimed a new constitution for the State. When they tried to put the new document into operation, however, the governor in office under the original constitution declared martial law- temporary rule by military authorities. The governor also called on the Federal Government for help. President John Tyler then took steps to put down the revolt, and it quickly collapsed. The question of which of the competing governments was the legitimate one was a major issue in Luther v Borden. But, again, the Supreme Court refused to decide the matter(Fox 32). The only extensive use ever made of the republican-form guarantee came in the years immediately following the Civil War. Congress declared that several southern States did not have governments of a republican form(Pollard). It refused to admit Senators and Representatives from those States until the States had ratified...

Impacts of Latest Advances in Technology on Recruitment and Selection Essay

Impacts of Latest Advances in Technology on Recruitment and Selection Process - Essay Example The intrusion of internet related technologies is visible in every segment of human life at present. Human life is rapidly entering a digital world in which all our activities are controlled by digital technologies. Communication facilities have been increased a lot as a result of the development of new technologies. It is possible for a person to communicate effectively with anybody in the world instantly with the help of modern communication technologies such as instant video chat, video calling, emails etc. Mobile phone technologies and global positioning technologies have improved a lot so that it is possible to locate a person instantly with the help of GPS tracking. Apart from mobile phone technologies, the development of modern technologies such as social networks, web 2.0 and e-methods have impacted businesses and organizations in one way or other. These technologies are used extensively in sales, marketing, advertising, recruitment etc by organizations. â€Å"Recruitment is the process of having the right person, in the right place, at the right time. It is crucial to organisational performance† (Recruitment: an overview, 2012). ... Social networks and other modern internet related technologies have changed the entire concept of recruitment in many ways. This paper analyses the technology oriented recruitment process in general and the advantages and disadvantages of such recruitment methods specifically. Technology oriented recruitment process (Gogari, 2011) â€Å"The buzzword and the latest trends in recruitment is the â€Å"E-Recruitment†. Also known as â€Å"Online recruitment†, it is the use of technology or the web based tools to assist the recruitment process† (E-Recruitment, 2007). Social networks and web 2.0 are used extensively as the major tools in e-recruitment. The popularity of social networks in daily life is growing day by day. In fact nobody-even the founders of social networks- anticipated such a huge success to these networks when they introduced it in the internet world. It should be noted that even Google and Microsoft like big companies failed to anticipate the challeng es raised by social networks like Facebook now. The Baron Finance Company Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

The Baron Finance Company - Coursework Example Kendall the court ruled that both parties were to suffer the losses.Advice For the company to overcome the capacity constraint in future and achieve efficiency in operations without the indication of space constraints, the manager should begin by carrying out proper building analysis to ensure that the space is ample for its operations. On the other hand, the company can obtain funds from various sources that are appropriate and obtain a building with enough space for all the workers. With the losses incurred in mind, everybody within the organization should direct their efforts towards restoring the finances lost during the transition period. Moreover, costs may be cut by minimizing trivial expenses as a way of reinstating the company’s financial position. All departments under finance should be given a role in the activity to ensure that high interconnectedness between the departments is achieved. In this way, it will be easy to eliminate the constraints bit by bit until the system is realigned as desired.Case lawThe law in this case involves intentional deception or ‘Antitrust’ business law, which highlights that the finance department needs to be entrusted with honest personalities. In this case both parties are involved in fraud because they cohere to personal motives mired with dishonesty. Application This law is applicable in that the company employs somebody who refused the job previously hence mistrust arises like in the case McNally v. United State. According to (Clemency, 2002), it is notable how fraud leads to losses in the hands of a ‘competent manager.’ Additionally, the investor is known to be deceitful and an irredeemable social climber who uses any tactic for selfish gains consequently, the company experiences losses that may be avoided. Advice The company should carry out employment procedures appropriately to obtain an employee who is experienced and has adequate expertise to commit to the job. The person shoul d be trustworthy, honest and selfless in order to strive towards achieving organization objectives. In this manner, the person in charge will be able to manage the organization appropriately especially in following up any small inconsistence especially in the finance department. This is for the sole reason that the losses involved are greatest and thus the need to control and prevent fraud as soon as any suspicions are made. Before making any legal move, a fraud examiner should be involved to follow up the inconsistencies keenly in order to establish a strong basis of evidence in regards to the nature of fraud in question. The little indicators identified may lead to greater realizations of fraud masterminds within the organization that may have operated for a long period without suspicion. Therefore, a small indicator should not be ignored because it is a guideline to more evidence when closely examined (Dyson & McKenzie, 1996). 3. Case The case presented is poor human resource man agement. The scenario is between Casati and the Gosia’s business strategy analyst. Law The law applicable is such a circumstance is ‘Foreign Workers & Employee Eligibility’ law. The analyst in this case is careless. This circumstance is likened with the case of Brown v. Kendall. Application The law relates to the organization since negligence is observed in the situation where the business strategic analyst fails to read the entire report hence leaving out the conclusion and forecast

Ethics and Islam Essay Example for Free

Ethics and Islam Essay The interpretation of secular vs. religious ethics is always interesting, when we try to understand which of the two deserve our support. Obviously, both ethical philosophies have the right to exist among us, but the provisions of the religious ethics in Said Nursi’s vision are not only unique, but are sometimes surprising, and are sometimes unacceptable to those, who keep to secular ethical traditions. Said Nursi insists on ethics having religious foundations. His ethical vision is based on the assumption that religion is the source of reliable ethical knowledge. â€Å"For Nursi, the ultimate source of all ethical reflection is the Qur’an† (Markham 69). In this situation it is possible to suggest that Qur’an should be simple and understandable to the common people, so that they should be able to follow its provisions. The assumption is rather debatable: on the one hand, there seems to be nothing negative or threatening in the fact that Said Nursi keeps to religious foundations of ethics. On the other hand, I may suggest that those who refuse to accept the life of the prophet Muhammad as the source of ethical knowledge, risk facing opposition from religious ethics’ supporters. This ethics loses its relevance as soon as it is faced with the fact that there are possible other sources of ethics in other cultures of the world. Moreover, and I would agree with Markham, in that there is no guarantee that being obedient to Qur’an means seeing its wisdom; in case we do not understand the provisions to which we should keep in our ethics, it loses its relevance and meaning. The strong side of religious ethics in Said Nursi’s words is in accepting violence as weakness in trying to resolve various disputes. â€Å"Nursi is committed to handling disagreement with peaceful means not because he shared a western skepticism about the truth of religion, but because of the truth of religion† (Markham 72). Secular ethics would easily reject these religious attitudes. While Nursi tries to justify the strength of religion, he obviously forgets that this strength is relevant only within the limited religious circles. Secularism exists and cannot be denied. For those who consider themselves being secular the strength of religion is closely connected with the power of metaphysical phenomenon. In the absence of the latter, the power of the former becomes debatable. Thus, religious foundations of ethics can be applied within the limited space of extremely religious eastern countries, which keep to Islamic religion. Especially interesting is Nursi’s ideas about personal ethics and social equality. His interpretation of a person in illness is rather curious, though is also natural within the eastern religious framework. â€Å"O ill person who lacks patience! Be patient, indeed, offer thanks! Your illness may transform each of the minutes of your life into the equivalent of an hour’s worship† (Makrham 74). The question is whether patience is equal to inactivity. Recognizing the religious value of pain and suffering is what Nursi tried to convey in his ethical teaching (Markham 75) but this also risks confusing ethics with religion, without creating any distinct border between them. Social ethics in Nursi’s vision tends to support equality through rejecting interest and recognizing the importance of redistribution. In these terms, Nursi seems to reject the pluralism of social status in the society. Moreover, rejection of interest is closer to rejecting secularism, than to supporting religious foundations of ethics. Conclusion The whole ethical theory created by Nursi deserves attention but seems to be founded on the grounds, which do not justify the strength of religion but better protect it from the intervention of the external knowledge. In this light religious ethics seems even more vulnerable, than Nursi tried to represent it. Monster.com Essay -- E-commerce Business Monster Jobs Essays

Monster.com Background:   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Monster.com is an internet site that is offered as an opportunity for job seekers to examine the market for available positions that will match their requirements. This way job seekers can shop around for a job that will be most appealing to them. The site also offers employers to shop around for the best suited employee since there is availability to post rà ©sumà ©s on the site. This site can be accessed by registering with a user id and have password so regular visits to the site can be established. Monster.com was an idea that came to life under the supervision of its creator, Jeff Taylor. Its road to success was ingenious and in the next couple of pages, we will examine the idea behind the success. Statement of the Problem:   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The idea started forming when the creator was put under pressure caused by the situation after the mid 1990’s recession. Jeff Taylor had started ADION, a niche advertising company the specialized in designing traditional recruitment advertisements for high-tech clients. When the economy started recovering after the recession, the clients were hungry for new material that would offer solution for their problems. Taylor was stuck trying to figure a solution.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The second problem was at the time that the idea formed in Taylor’s head, internet was just staring out. It was not known and the possibilities it offered was definitely not as wide as it is today. Many were skeptical of the idea and ADION’s clients were getting cold feet and wanted to withdraw. â€Å"Consensus was that I had lost focus; in their eyes I was doing ‘computer crap’.†, Taylor said about the general opinion about him at the time he was trying to launch his new idea.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Third problem occurred once the site was being launched. There weren’t enough people believing in it and the site did not draw the attention that was counted on. Measures had to be taken to get the site to attract response to the site.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Fourth problem was launching the site globally. Definition of key players and explanation of why they are key players:   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Most important key player is Jeff Taylor who is the creator of monster.com. Taylor came up with the idea of the monster idea by pure brain storming and he pursued it to the successful position it reached when TMP worldwide bought it.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Another key player is ADION, the advertising desig... ... might be regarded upon as international, is the fact that job seekers and employers looking for suitable employees, can be found all over the world. The desions however are positively international. Once an internet site is established, there is no limit to where it could be used from. The problem with that is what country does the site offer it services to. When the monster board was established, it dealt solely with the American market. It was the job seekers in America looking for at jobs offered by different companies located in the 50 states of the US.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  But once the acquisition was completed, the site was then formed to suit each one of the countries that TMP was offering it services in. monster.com has already established itself as the number one career helper in many countries, and it yet has plans to enter many more.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The AOL deal is another aspect of monster.com internationality. Since Monster.com became the exclusive career search site for all AOL properties, the penetration into foreign markets has continued. Through AOL, monster.com is able to access people and markets that would not have been possible if they had remained an American private company.

Alone Together: The Impact Of Social Media and Its Relationship to Loneliness Essay

Alone Together: The Impact Of Social Media and Its Relationship to Loneliness In the school, parks, restaurants, or streets we can always see a person who is busy â€Å"tweeting†, checking Facebook, or putting pictures to Instagram. Earlier in the past, people would spent their free time with family and friends, reading books, going to the park with kids, and playing games outside. If in the last century, people could say, â€Å"You are what your friends are†; nowadays, you are what you â€Å"like†, post, or share on Facebook. Social media networks have became some of the most entertaining and popular things all over the world, as well as it makes us remember the quote by T.S. Eliot: â€Å"Distracted from distraction by distraction.† Social media is a network of web-sites where people share or discus information; also, it is a great op- portunity to communicate long-distance and build new friendships. Although, social network was designed for people to become closer and h elp to improve their relations, it also declined out at- tempt to communicate in person. In urban life, social media makes such a lonely activity for us — to be stuck in front of the screen. The paradox of social technology that reduces our social in- volvement does affect a lot of people, and can lead to social awkwardness and loneliness. As big as the media itself, it connects all of us in every single aspect, but makes us to be alone together. How does social networks reduce our social involvement? There are three ways through which social media brings us to isolation from the real world: it is easy available, entertaining and very popular. At first, it is so easy and free to make an account on social website, such as Tweeter, Facebook, MySpase, Skype and so on. Because many of us have internet on out phones, it makes it more available and on the go. The statistics shows that, â€Å"over a billion people belong to Face- book, the world’s largest online social network, and over half of them log in daily† (Kross). Being around your friends or in school, we would not realize that we keep looking at our phones, and checking the latest news. Social networks m ake it easy for us to control distances — weather you choose open up for people, or keep them away, there is always a capability for you to keep your distance just right. I use social networks in my regular life, and it helps me to communicate with my family from all around the world. It is easier and cheeper for all of us; we do not have to spent money on our plane tickets, and cancel our plans,  because we can connect over the com- puter. On another hand, the technology reduces chances for me to travel and visit my family. In this way, we can see how easily our conversations transform to connections. People do not have to plan meetings and events in person, because they can connect, press button, and promote everything. Nowadays, most of the things we search for is through â€Å"the easy way†. Wether its interviews, shopping, planning birthday events or reunions, anything what we would usually do in person, now we do without getting out of our houses, and even without leaving our room. By sitting in front of the screen, and doing our â€Å"easy available† activities, we isolate ourselves from social life, which is also shows our laziness based on advantages of technology. Another of the ways though which social network isolating us from the real life, is the entertainment of it. People in general cannot live without something that can make them feel ï ¿ ¼happy and satisfied. Its a great source for us to get entertained, because being online we can present ourselves that we want to be. People can filter all the negatives and show only the positives through uploading pictures, statuses or other information. Social networks such Facebook have a huge amount of groups where people can share their interests; therefore, we have no need for meeting people in person, if we know whats going on in their lives through computer. It is of course helps more introvert people to find new friendships, but it does opposite outcome for more extrovert people, who get addicted to online society. Like video games, and mass media, social media has a great influence on us to get stuck at home. In one of the journals by Graeme Hutton, explains the connection between entertainment activities and humans: Passive social media activities — online reading and viewing, for instance — typically demand less involvement and cognitive processing than such active pursuits as writing, creating video, and posting to sites. Consumers are more likely to be involved in passive rather than active usage largely because such activities demand less conscious effort (566). The quote shows the relation that has speed up our social media use; which is also reminds us of the â€Å"easy available† entertaining activities that lead us to spent less time in public. More people get lonely, or depressed without socializing, and you can benefit from social network, that give you an opportunity to connect, or in some cases to disconnect from people. Finally, when you create a free account, make your profile and put  your â€Å"life† into it, most of people want to get famous. In another words, we want everyone to know what we are doing, and see how many people â€Å"like† or â€Å"share† it with us. People want to be popular, so their news get a top rank on a â€Å"news feed†, such as one on Facebook. We â€Å"engage socially online†, because we have â€Å"needs to promote ourselves† (Hutton 566). But as we search through our news feed we can see already â€Å"popular† people, who usually very good looking, or rich, or successful in their lives. Such little things makes us feel insecure about ourselves, and think that we are not good, pretty, smart enough. After these activities, some of us get soc ially awkward and do not want to attend the public, which will lead our road to loneliness. On another hand, the â€Å"popular† people spent a big amount of hours on the computer to promote themselves, which makes them lonely from the lack of activities they could have done outdoor with their friends. This example makes us to see the paradox of social technology, where we can feel cut off from other people even if they around us. In the short future, our generation will have a plugged-in lives. The explanation of it is that more and more people will get lazy, fake, insecure or jealous that would lead our society to shift. We would have more stereotype than unique people, because it will be â€Å"easier† for us to communicate with people such like us ourselves. Lack of emotions will increase, because people will forget how it is to have a facial expression. Loneliness will take the major spot, because we will be scared to act in front of other people whether than the screen. World will become a smaller place, but in this case it will fundamentally affect our so cial life. We will be alone, but together seeking for connection, and if people want to escape from loneliness, they would have to rely on new technology; therefore make it a vicious cycle.

The Cash Flow Budget of Hidetoseek Company Assignment

The Cash Flow Budget of Hidetoseek Company - Assignment Example This limit is only  £ 25000 but the negative balance of cash flows shows that in the month of July, the balance ( £ 36544) has crossed the limit. Therefore they have to think about any other source of the short-term loan. Another one issue is that before adopting the option of bulk purchase the company should determine the amount of short-term loan and their interest and they should compare it with the reduced cost. Because of cheap raw material if the company has to pay a huge amount of interest then it will be of no use. The difference between the cash and profit mainly lies between the working capital cycles. The process of calculating net profit and cash flow is different from each other. Before explaining or pointing out the differences it will be beneficial to understand the process of each method through the calculation of a particular month. In Task 1, the cash flow calculation has already been shown for the month of June now calculation of net profit can be shown. At first, it required the calculation of closing stock which will be as follows. {(8500 + 35000) - (16500*100/170)} = 33795. The next step is to calculate the gross profit and it will be {(33795+16500) – (8500+35000)} = 6795. Now all the expenses should be deducted from it to calculate the net profit. Therefore net profit will be {6795- (1333+2500+360+650+780+30000)}= (1828) whereas the closing balance of cash flow was  £ (9754). The above calculation depicts that not only the process but also the number of sales, purchase and other expenses are different. Here, the actual amount of all those items has been taken where in case of cash flows only the amount which is collected or paid during this month has taken. More specifically it can be stated that cash flow considers only the cash inflow and outflow but while calculating the profit all the actual sales, purchase and expenses are taken into account.

Who has been the most successful Prime Minister since 1945 and why Essay

Who has been the most successful Prime Minister since 1945 and why - Essay Example She is the first woman prime minister in history of United Kingdom. She is regarded as an iron lady by the political government more specifically the law makers, have referred her as the most successful prime minister since 1945 during the world war due her decisive nature. She managed to pip Clement Attlee labor party, a driving force that was researched by the international and political relations undergraduates when they spoke to more than 158 MPs at Royal Holloway University in London (Garnett 2007, p. 172). The research involved Clement Attlee, Gordon Brown and Margret Thatcher. From the research, many members of parliament based their arguments on decisive nature inherent in the prime ministers. It was seen that decisiveness was more significant, important, and progressive than energy, principles, intelligence, honesty or ruthlessness. The above leaders lacked the decisiveness nature that was inherent in Margret Thatcher. The outcome showed that she scored an aggregate score of 7.4 and Attlee scored 7.3, Tony Blair 6.8 and Winston Churchill who scored an average of 6.5. There are other prime ministers who fell below the category in the survey. In addition, Dr Nicholas Allen, a senior political lecturer at Royal Holloway’s who managed the survey had overseen the survey stated categorically that Margret Thatcher held a very special place in the minds of United Kingdom MPs. As much as Mrs. Thatcher policies were economical, they were also moral. In this regarded she confronted the empires of socialism and communism. During the political struggle, her beliefs were first tuned. In effect, there was a little change in comparison to what she resonated in Grantham (Stepney 2014, p.134). There are several prime ministers who have been in Downing Street for long, but the prime minister who resonates in the minds of people is Lady Thatcher. She is the only prime minister with an â€Å"-ism† during her political
